What To Expect During Your Session

Last week we talked in depth ( I thought I just heard a yawn ) about preparing for a photo session. This week we'll talk a little about what to expect during the session itself.

Your session will be about an hour to an hour and a half. You can thank my wife, better known as my beautiful assistant for this. If it were up to me I'd probably keep you there all day. Once I start shooting I get into a zone and I'm having so much fun I don't want to stop. Before I know it she's whispering in my ear to wrap it up before the people I'm shooting start shooting me. But I digress.

I like to arrive at our agreed location about fifteen to twenty minutes ahead of time to go over my plan with my wife, so she will know what to expect and where I might need help. This plan or vision was derived from visiting the location weeks ahead of time to plan the shoot taking into account your ideas for the session as well. By the time Jackie and I are done looking at the location my victims, I mean you arrive.

When you arrive I will talk to you and see if there are any changes to your plans or ideas, how many changes of clothes you brought, and what props you want to incorporate.  Then we will talk about my ideas for the shoot.

The most important thing I would like you to remember about the session is to HAVE FUN! I'm a very easy going guy who loves to joke and laugh, so be prepared to laugh. Oh and by all means feel free to poke fun at me as well, we are all there to have a good time. Taking pictures shouldn't be as stressful as it's made out to be. It's my job to relax you and make you feel at ease and I would like to think I do a pretty good job of it. To me, photography is about so much more than posing and stiff smiles. It's about making memories, having fun and capturing the candid, real you images.

Once we start the session I will start warming you up to the camera. I won't be barking posing orders ( I can get bossy ) or make you smile right away. I will start by taking some test shots of you, getting my lighting right and making sure nothing is out of place or in the picture I don't want, letting you gradually get used to being in front of the camera. Before too long you're relaxed and I've taken a couple of good shots of you and you didn't even realize it until I show you the image on the back of the camera.

I've noticed once I show people these images and they see how good they look and the fact that I'm totally hilarious ( that's my story and I'm sticking to it ) the nervousness melts off their faces and their bodies relax. Now the session starts in earnest.

At this point you're mine, I mean I will politely tell you how to stand, where I want your hands, have you fix your hair or fix it for you, how to pose your legs and where to look. Yes, this is the point where  I get kinda bossy.  Now we're having fun, but at any time stop me if you need to talk to me about something, have an idea, need to take a phone call, or need a break because your face hurts from smiling too much. During this time we will use your props, try your ideas and allow for wardrobe changes. I'm also not opposed to traveling to more than one location if necessary ( I just heard Jackie in my head, mind the time, tic toc, tic toc ). I really should thank her for keeping me on schedule though, actually, you should thank her, one of the young ladies I had the pleasure of shooting a while back told me I broke her smile. The banter and shooting will go on for the allotted time but before we finish at each location or for the day I will ask you if I covered everything you wanted. If we did I will let you go before your face freezes in a smile permanently or as I said before you want to shoot me. Before we all leave I'll tell you what to expect next. But that's for next weeks blog.

I would really appreciate it if you would sign up for my emails so you can be the first to know when I publish a new blog, release a new product or offer discounts and promotions. I promise I will never spam you. With that being said please welcome SmugMug to my site. Until next week, that's a wrap.
