The Year Was 1984

1984 the year all of us boys were practicing our David Lee Roth jumping kick and the girls were all swooning over John Bon Jovi and each week we tuned into a place where everyone knows your name. 

In 1984 DNA profiling was developed, the Macintosh Computer was released and Band-Aid released Do They Know It's Christmas.

The average cost of a house was $86,730, average yearly income was $21,600, a gallon of gas was $1.10 and a movie ticket was $2.50.

Speaking of movie tickets the big box office draws in 84 were Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, Splash and The Terminator, Arnold wasn't lyin he keeps coming back. 

On TV we were watching The A-Team, Knight Rider, Fame, Cheers, Hill Street Blues and Magnum P.I.

#21 Billy Squier - Rock Me Tonight

William Haislip Squier an American rock musician who had a string of hits in the late 80's. He is best know for his song The Stroke. 

#20 John Waite - Missing You

John Charles Waite an English musician who was the lead vocalist for the Babys and Bad English before embarking on a solo career in 1984. Missing you was a #1 hit on Billboard and in the top ten in the UK.

#19 Romantics - Talking In Your Sleep

An American Power Pop band from Michigan formed in 1977. The bands first show was opening for the New MC5 in 1977. 

#18 Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me

Kennedy William Gordy also known as Rockwell is a former singer-songwriter signed to the Motown label.

#17 Nena - 99 Luftballons

Nena is a German singer, actress and comedian who rose to international fame in 83. She re-recorded the song in English in 1984 as 99 Red Balloons. She has sold over 25 million records makeing her one of Germany's most successful music artists.

#16 Michael Jackson - Thriller

Dubbed the King Of Pop Michael was one of the most popular artists in the world and was the best selling music artist during the year of his death. His publicized personal life made him a global figure in pop culture for over 40 years.

#15 Kiss - Heaven's On Fire

An American band formed in 1973 Kiss was well know for their face paint and elaborate performances. The band has gone through several line up changes with Stanley and Simmons the only remaining original members.

#14 Slade - Run Runaway

An English rock band from Wolverton they rose to fame in the glam rock 70's achieving 17 top 20 hits and 6 #1's on the UK charts. They have sold over 50 million records world wide.

#13 Honeymoon Suite - New Girl Now

A Canadian band formed in 1981 in Niagra Falls their bands name was a nod to the unofficial honeymoon capital of the world. 

#12 John Cafferty and The Beaver brown Band - On The Dark Side

They are an American rock band from Rhode Island that began in the 70's and became popular with this song from the movie Eddie and The Cruisers. 

#11 Big Country - In A Big Country

A Scottish band formed in Fife in 1981, was at the height of their success in the early to mid 80's but retained a cult following for years. 

#10 Night Ranger - When You Close Your Eyes

Night Ranger was formed in 1979 in San Francisco and gained popularity in the 80's with a series of hit singles such as You Can Still Rock In America and Sister Christian. 

#9 Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

An American heavy metal band originally from my home state of New Jersey then later based on Long Island. many of thier songs deal with parent, child conflicts and critisism of the educational system. 

#8 Steve Perry - Oh Sherrie

Stephan Ray Perry is an American singer best know for his years as the front man of Journey before departing on his solo career. He was with Journey from 77 to 87.

#7 Scandal - The Warrior

An American rock band from the 80's fronted by Patty Smyth. The Warrior was their biggest hit coming in at #7 in 84. 

#6 38 Special - If I'd been The One

Starting out as a Souther Rock band by the early 80's 38 Special had shifted more towards arena rock without giving up it's Souther rock roots. If I'd Been The One hit #1 in 84 on Billboards Album Rock Tracks. 

#5 Sammy Hagar - I Can't Drive 55

Mr. Red Rocker who has made my list again, was born Samuel Roy Hagar in 1947. He headed up Montrose before going solo then replaced the wild front man of Van Halen David Lee Roth. He spent 9 years with Van Halen before going solo again. 

#4 van Halen - Jump

An American rock band that was formed in pasadena, CA in 1972. The band went on to become major starsand by the early 80's were one of the most successful rock acts of the time. 1984 was their most successful album. 

#3 Ratt - Round And Round

An American heavy metal band that had commercial success in the 80's. The group is best known for their hit singles Round And Round, and Lay It Down. They were instrumental in the formation of the early 80's glam metal scene also known as hair metal. 

#2 Prince - When Doves Cry

Another artist who has made my lists more than once Prince is n American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, actor and director. Price was influential from the late 70's until his deathof an accidental overdose at the age of 57 in 2015.

#1 Bon Jovi - Runaway

I can almost hear all the girls sighing as they look at this picture. Bon Jovi is an Americaan band formed in 1983 and rose to quick success with the song runaway the first single from their self titled album. They gained global recognition with their third album Slippery When Wet which contained the hit songs Livin On A Prayer and You Give Love A Bad Name.
