Hello friends, I hope you’re all having a great week so far. I think it’s time for me to go on a little rant, I’ll keep it short but it’s long overdue.
We all pretty much understand by now that the internet gods are watching our every move. Gone are the days of deleting your cache to cover your tracks, you know who you are.
I can be on line searching for some widget and then go to a news site and see advertisements for that very widget just seconds later. Kinda creepy huh? As handy as that can be to help you find what you are looking for it also has a lot of down sides as well. Don’t even get me started on the privacy issues. What I’m going to focus on today is the so called fitness gurus that are trying to sell you every this or that quick fix in the book. Just because we use fitness or health tags and read a lot of health related articles, such as this blog your reading right now the internet gods (yes I’m talking to you Mark Zuckerberg, you too Google) have taken it upon themselves to show you what they think you want to see. Come on above mentioned people, I’m into my health so stop showing me adds for magic health fixes.
Several weeks ago I’m surfing Facebook as any normal human does these days and came across a friend in my feed that was trying to sell something. So I stopped and read, it said something along the lines of Do you want to lose 30lbs in 30 days? Interested? DM me. After cleaning up the buttered coffee I’d spit out I started to read the comments. As you can imagine there were plenty of pick me’s in there, the poor suckers (maybe I’ll try to sell them my beach front property in Montana). I have a serious pet peeve about claims like this. So me being me the shy quiet type who hates conflict , he said with much sarcasm, I jumped on the post and started commenting and inquiring about said product. My comments were along the lines of, there are no quick fixes, health and fitness take time, please show me what this product is and the ingredients and I would be happy to have a mature adult conversation about your product so your followers can make an informed decision. What do you think happened? If you think she came on and had a mature debate about the subject you would be completely and utterly wrong. I was blocked and unfriended. Now to me all this does is prove me right, right.
Just this past weekend it happened again, The post went something like this. Looking to replace your coffee with FAT BURNING coffee, Not only does it help burn fat blah, blah, blah. Again there were the here’s your sign (sounding like Bill Engvall) pick me crowd. So again me being me I commented, show me the ingredients. Which at least this woman was mature enough to do. Folks it was just a packet of weak a$$ buttered coffee with MCT Oil. It Has less fat than normal homemade buttered coffee and doesn’t say where the MCT Oil comes from. (coconut is best). So then I commented “ the two things I noticed is it’s fairly low in fat, it could use more and it contains milk which a lot of people have issues with. I then said, this in itself is not a weight loss drink, it’s part of a diet plan that should include real food, possibly intermittent fasting and exercise. This drink WILL NOT cause you to lose weight unless it’s followed with multiple other things. I drink my own blend of buttered coffee with MCT daily also from a packet but containing much more healthy fats, yes you heard that right fat is healthy. In her defense she did get back to me and agree with all that I said and yes the MCT comes from coconut. Obviously I’m not totally against supplements as I take certain vitamins, I’m against the delivery methods and how they pray on the uneducated people looking for a quick fix.
Case in point, I had a brief conversation with the person who shared this post for the unmentioned lady I talked about above. She said she agreed that these kinds of products can be trouble as well as life threatening. She herself tried some quick fix once and she ended up in the hospital. It affected her heart to the point she will have trouble for the rest of her life. That being the case I question, why in the Sam H E double toothpicks are you sharing these kinds of posts. I suggested she share my blog, I’m not selling anything and I’m trying to educate people so they can make good healthy decisions, but nope, my stuff doesn’t get shared. Things that make you go hmmmm.
This is just two isolated incidents. We have all seen the videos and advertisements to get thin and chiseled all you need to do is this, or 10 hacks to get thin without diet or exercise. Gym to expensive, try this pill. Shock yourself into shape with (add name of ridiculous gadget). Yes people are spending hundreds of dollars to put electrodes on there muscles and think they will shock themselves to bigger biceps. But, But, But, the guy in the ad was ripped ( sticks finger to his head like a gun and pulls the trigger). The list goes on and on. The U.S. weight loss market is a 66 billion, yes I said billion dollar a year industry. Everyone is trying to sell you something that may cause anal leakage or worse. Remember those so called healthy Lay’s chips on the market a few years back, ya they pulled them because they cause yup anal leakage.
It’s honestly all very simple folks and the old adage is true, If it seems to good to be true it probably is. You will not find your health in the bottom of a pill bottle. You will not find it at the bottom of your cup of drink mix. You certainly won’t find it in that Healthy Lay’s chip. It starts with what you put into your body every day. Yes exercise plays a very important part in your overall fitness but what you fuel your body with is more important than anything else. Most people are more concerned with what they feed their pets than what they feed themselves or their children.
I read an article recently the said 70 to 80% of the American population is overweight and 30+% of that 70 to 80 is obese, and then a weight loss ad came up (head explodes). Why is that, what happened to us, several things I believe.
Inventions and scientific advancements have made our lives easier but they have also paved the way for some really bad foods to be made dirt cheap and sold to us for huge profits. GMO’s for one and just look at the subsidized corn industry. Corn has no nutritional value and is in everything, high fructose corn syrup is the devil. but that’s for another post.
Let me ask you these questions. Would you put sugar into your car’s gas tank? What if I told you that by taking a bite of a candy bar you would die instantly, would you do it? Of course not to both, am I correct. But by consuming all these sugars and processed foods you ARE killing yourself just not instantly. But I digress.
I could literally go on and on for hours and pages about this but I should probably wrap it up and save some ranting for another time. okay, okay, I lied about keeping it short, it’s my blog and I’ll drone on if I want to, drone on if I want to, drone on if I want to, you’d drone on too if this ticked you off too.
So long story long, there ARE NO QUICK FIXES. It all takes time, hard work and eating REAL FOOD. Educate yourselves and don’t get taken to the cleaners by these snake oil salesman. But seriously if you are damn determined to throw your money away I would be more than happy to take it off your hands, just let me know and I will open up the commerce section of my web page and you can donate away.
Let me know what you think in the comments below. I would love to hear your opinions as well. Do you have any topics you would like discussed? I would also appreciate a like and share. The more people I can reach and help the better.
Peace, Health, Love and Happiness,
