Ok so now that the title grabbed your attention with false advertising you may as well keep reading.
Admittedly the images above might be a slight exaggeration but you would be crazy to think that using essential oils is all witchcraft and hocus pocus.
I thought about writing this article with the my male readers in mind. I was going to talk about the oils I use for my beard and skin and how I blend them but that would be robbing all of you of the benefits of all the other oils I use as well.
That being said the reason I started using the oils was to get away from all the harsh chemicals in deodorants, shaving creams, beard balms, soaps, actually most personal hygiene products. Just read the ingredients on any of them, if you can’t pronounce the ingredient as a general rule you don’t need it on or in your body. Then there is all the drugs big Pharma tries to shove down your throat. I have found through experimentation and experience the more you can cut these unpronounceable chemicals and drugs out of your day to day life the better you will feel and a few years back I decided to do just that.
Like I said I was sick and tired of putting that crap into my body and started looking for alternative methods to both save money and help with some of my ailments that I was taking medication for. Around that same time my wife and her best friend started selling doTERRA oils. As these oils started coming into the house I started learning about them and their uses. I was totally on board to try the oils to see if they did what they claim.
I’m not going to go into to this one in great detail but the first oils I tried were for OAB, yes it totally sucks getting older. I used the oils Clary Sage, Lemongrass and Lavender. Total disclosure, this remedy didn’t work for me. So I moved on to the next ailment.
I have genetically high cholesterol, so naturally this was the next thing I wanted to try to get under control. The oils I used for this were Lemongrass and Clove. Some of the major benefits of taking Lemongrass that were of interest to me with high cholesterol are, stress and anxiety reducer, detoxifying antifungal properties, stomach helper, reduces inflammation, powerful antioxidant effects, fights flu’s and colds and of course lowers cholesterol. The benefits of Clove are, high in antioxidants, digestive aid, immune system aid, may help increase heart health and lower blood pressure and it’s an anti-inflammatory. To use the Clove and Lemongrass Dr. Jackie (my wife) would put 2 drops of lemongrass and 1 drop of Clove combined with 5 ml of a carrier oil (coconut) into a capsule and down the hatch it would go. Unlike the oils for OAB these did help get my cholesterol in check. The year before I had tried just diet and exercise and it helped then I tried diet, exercise and the oils and there was even more of an improvement.
I was pretty excited to see that the oils were helping my cholesterol so my curiosity was peaked. What else can they do I wondered. Now I was on a mission to find out.
Not long after Dr. Jackie and Dr Denyse started selling the oils Jackie came down with a cold/flu. This was a perfect opportunity to experiment. Can the oils help cure or ease the symptoms where drugs were usually used. The answer was a resounding yes. She mixed 5 drops of each into a diffuser of, Tea Tree (Melaleuca), On Guard (Clove, Orange, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary), Breath (Laural leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon, Cardomom, Ravintsara and Ravensara), and Eucalyptus. If you notice we are doubling if not tripling up on a couple of the oils.
The reason these oils were selected is because of their properties. Tea Tree (Melaleuca) fights bacteria, viral and fungal infections, relieves congestion and respiratory infections, and may help prevent with antibiotic resistance among other things. without going through each oil in On Guard what it basically does is helps the immune system work more efficiently by warding off viruses and bacteria as well as help the immune system fight off illness when you do get sick. When it comes to Breath I think reading all the different oils that are in it it’s pretty easy to see what it does for you, as if the name doesn’t give it away. Breath helps you breath, and it really does. I know people who carry a bottle around with them and use it as needed. The stuff is awesome. Last but not least is Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus much like the other ingredients in Breath opens your airways to help you breath. It also helps with coughs, seasonal allergies, fights infections, reduces inflammation and pain, and improves earaches and headaches.
Not only did these oils help her it wasn’t long before I caught whatever it was that she had and I had the chance to try it myself. For both of us it shortened the length of our illnesses as well as eased the symptoms and allowed us to sleep. It worked so well I bought some for my parents to use and they too love it.
Well now that you’re looking at it, let’s talk about some of the oils I use on it. My skin takes a beating, especially my face. Whether I’m sweating in the gym, walking in -25 degrees or working in the hot sun my skin goes through hell and needs all the help it can get. So how do I help this face stay looking so young and handsome you may ask, well let me tell you.
I went out on Google and researched essential oil skin care, shave oil beard oil etc and came up with tons of different oils and blends to help. Let’s start with my shave oil.
Like most men I’ve spent thousands of dollars on shave creams and oils over the years, so I got to thinking. Why in the sam He!! am I paying for shave oils when I have everything I need right here to make my own, and so I did. Here is what I use. Clove again, it’s a very powerful oil. In this case though I use it for its ability to promote skin health and fight bacteria. Tea Tree (Melaleuca) again for its bacteria, viral and fungal infection fighting properties. I mix 5 drops of each into a small bottle and mix it with two carriers coconut oil and sweet almond extract filling the rest of the bottle with half of each. Both carriers are know to be very good for the skin as well and lubricate well to help the razor glide across the skin. An almond size amount or smaller is enough to shave an entire face.
My post shave/shower oil contains oils to help keep my beard manageable and soft and keeps my face and neck moisturized and healthy. The oils I use here are (again 5 drops of each topped off with both sweet almond and coconut oil) Ylang Ylang which is well known for its hair thickening properties, also being a mood booster, it helps fight the development of skin cancer, promotes skin health and hair loss remedy. Thyme oil heals cuts, kills bacteria and infections, promotes skin health (acne cure) and prevents hair loss. Ginger is high in antioxidants, stimulates hair growth, treats damaged hair follicles, it is even said to help turn gray hair darker again. Cedarwood improves skin conditions, promotes hair growth, is an antiseptic, and just smells darn good and manly. Frankincense is an astringent and can kill harmful germs and bacteria, heals skin and prevents signs of aging, improves memory, and prevents wrinkles. Last but not least is Sandalwood, it promotes mental clarity (which I desperately need), It’s an astringent, antiviral and antiseptic, anti inflammatory, anti aging, and anti cancer effects. Lets see your store bought after shave do all that.
So ya there’s that. Peppermint oil is a big one in my arsonal. Obviously it helps with bad breath which is why it is in so many gums and mints but I also use for relieving sore muscles and joint pain, sinus and allergy relief, helps with digestive issues, increased energy, helps with itching and bug bites, repels bugs, promotes skin health and provides sunburn protection and relief, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Try to buy all that in one product at Walmart, good luck. With this oil I either apply it directly to my skin, put it into my water and add it to my post shave oils. It’s such a versatile oil I thought it should get it’s own section.
Helichrysum is the last oil I’m going to mention and is one I think every medicine cabinet should have. The reason I like to keep it around is because of it’s wound healing properties. It is also an anti bacterial anti microbial and antifungal. I’ve seen this stuff in action a couple of times both on myself and others. Speaking from personal experience I had a pretty nasty cut on my finger knowing what this oil does I grabbed it and poured a few drops on the cut. It’s almost amazing how quickly this coagulates the blood and starts the healing process.
This list could go on for many more pages but these are the major oils I use on a regular basis. I wholeheartedly suggest you do some research on your own and give some of these oils a try. I would also be happy to answer any questions you may have on this topic.
If you choose to try some of these on your own I’d like to suggest a few friends of mine who sell and are also very well educated in the blending and uses of essential oils. You can click on the names and it will take you to their FaceBook or website pages, they are Denyse Morgan and my wife from Bridger who sell doTERRA essential oils. Melissa Scianna owner of Vintage Apothecary . Melissa has a wonderful shop just outside of Bridger and sells many CBD products, herbs and oils. The brands of oils she carries are Eden Botanicals, Mountain Rose Herbs and Starwest Botanicals, and right here in Butte is Ashley Kingston owner of the Enchanted Mermaid. Ashley carries doTERRA oils as well as CBD products. Any of these amazing business owners would be happy to help you with any questions or concerns you may have, please contact them or me your body and mind will thank you.
The oils I mentioned have many more uses than I have time to comment on and there are so many more oils out there I would like to try. I have no problems experimenting with the oils because they are all natural and for the most part harmless but let me just caution you against using cheaper off name brands, they tend to cut corners and aren’t as beneficial. Let me also warn you through experience some of these oils are damn hot and will burn your skin and throat if not taken with a carrier oil such as Oregano., many many beneficial uses made from the Devil’s sweat, ya it’s that hot.
I hope you found this somewhat informational and I really hope you’ll give it a try. Not only will your mind and body thank you in the long run your wallet will as well. It’s amazing what these oils do and what they replace. Stay healthy fit fam and see you next week and as always please like, comment and share so that I can reach and help as many as possible.
