I was reading health and wellness articles the other day and was shocked to see that according to Bloomberg, of the 56 of healthiest countries listed America ranked at 35. Now I knew we weren’t doing great and by no means are we the most unhealthy, as a matter of fact the top 10 most unhealthy countries are all in Africa.
Below I listed the top five healthiest countries to live in according to Bloomberg. Just what is it that makes these countries so much better than the good ol US of A?
The 56 countries are ranked based variables such as life expectancy from birth, access to clean water, healthcare, sanitation etc. while deducting points for tobacco use and obesity among other things.
Right now Spain has the highest life expectancy and is trailed closely by Japan and Switzerland. Cancer and heart disease are on the decline in Spain and on the rise here in the states. When you look at the eating habits of these countries, and I can vouch for Italy, they are enjoying what amounts to the Mediterranean diet with lots of EVOO, nuts and seeds.
I usually don’t eat grains but when I was in Italy I had pasta every day and not once did it make me feel sluggish, sick or bloated. Not only is the food delicious it’s far healthier than it’s counter parts here in America. I believe I mentioned it before but did you know the giant food conglomerates send healthier versions of their food overseas and feed us the shit food full of artificial sweaters and chemicals that you need to be a chemist to pronounce.
After doing a little research here are the major reason I found we have fallen to number 35 on the list.
One of the biggest reasons is our outdated health care system. Doctors are trained to treat an ailment not cure it and their first line of defense is to throw medicine at it. Can you imagine how much money doctors and big Pharma would lose if we actually cured instead of treated. We need to look for ways to not only cure instead of treat, we need to be preventative in our health and wellness. Americans need to be taught at a very early age healthy habits instead of waiting until its too late. For example we as Americans need to be taught, as well our health care providers the power food has when introduced into our bodies. Studies are showing Alzheimer’s is a form of Diabetes (type3) and in some cases is caused from years of eating sugars and inflammation causing by foods. In ancient China doctors were paid to keep their patients well, if they fell ill they would not be paid or they might even be banished. Interesting concept.
Number two on my list, which leads people to need number one, is our God awful diet. We eat far too much sugar, and starches and not nearly enough fruits and veggies. Seriously who’s the asshole that created a bacon cheeseburger on donuts. Food, like everything else in this country is about the bottom dollar. Companies are making food as cheaply as they can, which leads to real food substitutes. Half the time what your eating is maybe 10% real food the rest was made in a lab. Not only was it made in a lab it was also designed by it’s creators to addict you so you want more. The real reason you can’t eat just one.
Once the scientists/chemists are done creating their fake food masterpieces it then goes on to the marketers. Every box of cookies and bag of chips has been designed and tested to draw you in. Case in point, in a recent conversation I was asked to look at this new decaf herbal tea. The person said they thought it was healthy because, yes it’s herbal and yes it’s decaf and they even have printed on the front No Artificial Sweeteners. Sounds good right? So they handed me the bottle and I turned to the ingredients, first ingredient, Hibiscus tea, second on ingredients list 24 grams of added sugar, yup 24 grams.
It has gotten to the point that crap food is far more available in our fast paced lives then ever before. We don’t mean to eat greasy nasty foods but it’s all right there at our finger tips. Hey McDonald’s and Burger King, yes I’m talking to you. If you made healthier food, hell just make real food, God only knows what your hamburgers and nuggets are made from and the fish, well I don’t even want to know, people would still buy your product and because it was healthier they might live longer and patronize your establishment for many more years, just a thought.
3. Now we all know that our health care system isn’t taking preventative measures to keep us well and our food has caused the obesity rate to triple but it isn’t the food alone. Number three on my list of why America is so unhealthy is that we have become extremely sedentary. So not only do we eat badly and far too much, we exercise far too little. Our lives have become full of little comforts we didn’t have just decades ago. Comforts that make our lives easier and our bodies fatter. On line shopping for one. Just think of how many miles we used to walk around the malls now anything we want is at the click of a button. When I was little I was outside from sun up to sun down, as were most kids on my block, enter the invention of the gaming console and a thousand channels on TV and you don’t see many kids or families out playing. Most schools had one or two overweight kids but the rest were pretty fit and active. Now the overweight kids out number the slim.
Look around and its easy to see the obesity epidemic has gotten way out of control. If your thin these days you have trouble finding clothes that fit because everything is catered to heavier people. People have become overworked, stressed out, impoverished and exhausted and the last thing they want to do is exercise. I’ve fallen into the trap many times myself. A long hot day at work, damn that ice cold beer looks good. I’ve had stressful days and filled my face with comfort food. I didn’t sleep for crap last night I’m going to skip my workout today. Any of that sound familiar. It’s very easy to do. Pretty soon one day turns into two then three and so on. Before you know it months have gone buy and you’re buying bigger clothes.
If we drill down even farther we can see poor states have and even harder time with health issues. Our countries poorest states are also our fattest and most unhealthy.
A couple reasons this is happening is because of the lack of health and nutrition education and the giant food companies engineering the food to overcome your willpower. As I said earlier, these companies make food as cheaply as possible, so you know you aren’t getting good quality or in many cases real food. This food is then sold cheaper than healthy foods, placed on lower shelves and wrapped in a way that catches your eye. So when your food has addictive qualities and is far less expensive than healthy alternatives which one are you going to grab when on a tight budget.
With all this said, what are we supposed to do to combat the issues? We can’t take on health care and big pharma. We can’t take on the giant food conglomerates, and there is only so much we can do to help the poor we certainly can’t change the economy as hard as we try. So it boils down to YOU, it all comes down to individual choices. There is no one solution other than people taking their health into their own hands. I have started saying no to the big food companies, no to the grain, no to the sugar and all the other food that makes me feel like shit.

A doctor accidentally prescribes a laxative to his patient instead of cough syrup. Three days later the patient returns for a checkup and the doctor asks, “ How are you feeling Mr. Jones, are you still coughing?”
Mr. Jones reply’s, “Hell no, I’m afraid too.”
